In its original incarnation as ‘Heavy Heavy’ the instrumental version of this track attracted its fair share of attention on the recent Breakin’ Bread compilation ‘dirtybeatbreakinfunkandhiphop’. Under their respective aliases, producers Natural Self and Nostalgia 77 drag their frantic break-beat monster into mash-up territory here, marrying it with a timeless lyrical performance from the iconic Kool Keith.
The early-’90s acapella from Ultramagnetic MC’s ‘Poppa Large’ sits snugly here over the twosome’s relentless barrage of jarring drum breakdowns, funky guitar snippets and overall musical madness. The end result sounds so organic that if Keith himself were to hear ‘Poppa Heavy’ he’d probably be left wondering if it was a remix recorded during a blunted late-night studio session that he’d subsequently forgotten.
Brighton meets The Bronx and proves the old-school Rakim adage that it ain’t where you’re from, it’s where you’re at.
