UK release date 12.07.2007

Harlem-born, church-raised singer June April Gardner studied jazz at university and has performed with luminaries like Lionel Hampton and Ron Carter.

Although, by all accounts, her debut CD, ‘What Am I’ is ostensibly a jazz album, soul fans should check out this track, which is the second track in on the singer’s ‘Jazz Radio Singles’ EP. The catchy ‘Tick Tock’ is right out of the Erykah Badu/Jill Scott book of jazz-inflected neo-soul. The groove has a booming hip hop kick drum feel, with April’s lissom, Billie Holiday-esque vocal punctuated by trumpet flourishes while gliding effortlessly over lush electric piano chords. Worth investigating.
