France’s Dirty Sound System crew have been steadily forging a name for themselves with their re-edits on limited edition, numbered 12” vinyl.
With a policy of no promos, no reprints, and limited to 1,000 copies per release, these are intended solely for the record shop faithful. From extended disco unknowns to diskrautrock, deep folk to Northern soul treasures, their Dirty Edits series served up to date have included Cat Steven’s ‘Was Dog A Doughnut’, Edwin Starr’s ‘Get Up’, Can’s ‘Mothersky’ and Prince’s ‘1999’. With fans as diverse as Pepe Bradock and Ewan Pearson, Erol Alkan and DJ Cosmo, it looks as if crossover success is imminent with the re-release of one of their edits for 679 Recordings.
Pilooski’s take on ‘Beggin’’ by US crooner Frankie Valli, (best known for the theme to ‘Grease’,) is an exercise in restraint – chopping up the chorus on this Northern soul nugget, adding drums, effects and sweeping strings to create a spine-tingling frenzy of a track, which, like a sex-starved mongrel, keeps on coming back for more.
