Milt Jackson’s favourite vibraphonist delivers an album with plenty of beautiful love ballads in his first recording as a leader in over eight years.
His new quartet sees old west coast friend Renee Rosnes on piano, Dwayne Burno, who also recorded with hip hop band Digable Planets, on bass and the great Al Foster on drums. Mr Hutcherson’s contribution to the vibes technique is huge. He has helped considerably to develop and reshape the vibes beyond its traditional rhythmic role to a new harmonic function, enhanced by complex melodies and sharp lyricism. Just to mention a few, classics like ‘Jitterbug Waltz’, ‘Along Came Betty’ and Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Somewhere’ find a new home on this LP. A remarkable telepathic interaction between Bobby and his rhythmic section make sure those classics reach higher grounds without ever losing the original profound respect for the jazz tradition. A wonderful sentimental journey.
