LOVEBOX: IS COMING
Amid the increasingly noisy din of London’s summer festival circuit, the Lovebox Weekender shines brightly this year. Once again it takes over Hackney’s Victoria Park for two days of music and mayhem.
Sly & The Family Stone, who haven’t performed in the UK since 1987, headline on Saturday July 21, sharing the main stage with the likes of Blondie, Soul II Soul, The Presets and Patrick Wolf. Meanwhile on Sunday 22, Lovebox bosses Groove Armada join The B-52s, The Rapture, Nouvelle Vague and Hot Chip.
Numerous smaller stages and tents are hosted by such luminaries as Trojan Sound System, Secret Sundaze and Horse Meat Disco. Keep moving around the site to catch Gilles Peterson, Scratch Perverts, Freeform Five, New Young Pony Club, Man Like Me, Freeform Five, Mr Hudson & The Library, DJ Derek, Daddy G and many more.
There will also be the obligatory fun fair, kid’s area and green field plus art, theatre, circus, comedy and beach volleyball. And some clever clogs have decided to re-create the Pentagon war room set from Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove and fill it with DJs.
“Lovebox is put together by people who live and breathe music. We want to celebrate and showcase today's amazing musicians across all the genres that excite us be it folk, hip hop, indie, disco-punk, rock, world or electronic music,” Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay said. “These are exciting times and Londoners deserves a festival that isn't run by corporate sponsors but by people who are involved at roots level.”
Amen to that.
