Brixton’s Plan B is a case in point. In recent months, the venue has taken on a number of regular live music and club events that push the musical boundaries, and one of them is Off The Wall.
It’s a monthly Sunday night excursion into what, for many, was a golden clubbing era – the soulful grooves of the mid to late 80s, and the swingbeat, hip hop soul and R&B of the first half of the 90s. 5th Avenue, Studio Express 625 and Mixaphonics are your knowing DJs. As a result, the night draws a combination of veteran ravers reliving their glory days, and open-minded younger clubbers, curious to experience how it used to go down, and hungry for a change from the usual predictable mass-market pap peddled by so many other venues.
There are further attractions to the venue; it recently opened a second room, B Low, transforming a forgotten basement into an intimate club space, and fitted with a brand new Funktion One sound system to match the huge one in the main room. Those who are down with such things will doubtless be impressed with the 21" dual bassbin and state-of-the-art DJ booth, too.
Off The Wall happens on the second Sunday of every month at Plan B, 418 Brixton Road, London SW9. Next session, Sunday 8th July. Entry is £7 before midnight, £10 after. For info., phone 08701165421. www.plan-brixton.co.uk
